The UNCOPE is a brief, six-question, no-cost screen designed to assist in identifying individuals at-risk for substance-related disorders.
Note that all substance-disorder screens such as the UNCOPE and even more lengthy tools, are not appropriate for assessments at treatment programs, but rather are best used when addictive behaviors are not the presenting complaint. These may include employee assistance settings, mental health settings, marital or family counseling clinics, etc.
Using the UNCOPE is not appropriate as a primary assessment in addiction treatment programs, as an intake tool, nor as a diagnostic tool. It can be used as a corollary to verify whether a problem exists. Using the UNCOPE with individuals already identified as being at-risk for substance disorders would be redundant.
