The Change Companies® is proud to partner with the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) to publish two new resources for organizations preparing for ASAM Level of Care Certification. The ASAM Level of Care Certification Manual and ASAM Level of Care Certification Preparation Workbook are available immediately through The Change Companies®.
ASAM Level of Care Certification is the first program of its kind to independently assess and verify a treatment program’s ability to deliver services consistent with the levels of care described in The ASAM Criteria. It currently covers adult residential and inpatient treatment programs at levels of care 3.1, 3.5 and 3.7. ASAM Level of Care Certification is different from but complementary to accreditation, which is a comprehensive quality review of a program and its service delivery and related business practices. ASAM Level of Care Certification demonstrates a program’s capacity to deliver a specific level of care, thereby differentiating between the multiple levels of care available for addiction treatment. To be certified, programs must demonstrate the ability to deliver a specific level of care as outlined in The ASAM Criteria service characteristic categories: setting, staff, support systems, assessment/treatment planning, therapies and documentation.
ASAM Level of Care Certification Manual
The ASAM Level of Care Certification Manual describes the level of care standards derived from The ASAM Criteria, the rating elements that will be assessed during the certification survey and the policies, procedures and systems a program should have in place to meet the standards.
The manual is the basic reference for understanding the ASAM Level of Care standards and the rating elements applicable to ASAM Level of Care Certification. It is designed to be used in conjunction with the ASAM Level of Care Certification Preparation Workbook and The ASAM Criteria.
ASAM Level of Care Certification Preparation Workbook
The ASAM Level of Care Certification Preparation Workbook outlines the rating elements that will be assessed by certification surveyors and provides a template for programs to conduct self-assessments to identify strengths and areas for improvement.
The workbook is designed to help treatment programs assess their readiness to meet the ASAM Level of Care standards and the rating elements applicable to ASAM Level of Care Certification. It provides space for treatment program staff to indicate compliance with standards, the location of relevant documentation and any needed improvement. It is designed to be used in conjunction with the ASAM Level of Care Certification Manual and The ASAM Criteria.
The ASAM Criteria
Also published by The Change Companies®, The ASAM Criteria is the authoritative source of standards for multidimensional assessment, patient placement and level of care service characteristics in addiction treatment.
The ASAM Criteria applies the newest science in the field of addiction medicine, is compliant with the DSM-5 and incorporates a user-friendly functionality. The latest edition includes emerging areas of focus, such as gambling and tobacco use disorders, as well as population-specific sections, including working with older adults, persons in safety-sensitive occupations and persons in criminal justice settings.
