Talk about some big shoes to fill.
I want to start by thanking everyone for their support and encouragement at the beginning of this new chapter. It’s been an honor to work with Don in helping produce his Mindful Midweeks over the past several years, and to hear of the many amazing conversations his writing sparked. I’m looking forward to learning so much from all of you.
Here’s a little information about me: I’m 30 years old, with creative writing graduate degrees from the University of Washington. I love reading about the science of behavior change. Oh, and I’m also fascinated with superheroes.
Most of all, I love to tell stories. A little while back, I started thinking about what really counts as a “superpower,” and how our small, daily accomplishments are so much more impressive than any supernatural ability could ever be.
I’d like to play awhile with this thread, if you’ll indulge me. I want to take these weekly messages of behavior change and spin them into stories about a superhero who is slowly learning how real people make real changes in their lives. It will be called “I’LL SAVE YOU!” and other lies, because superheroes don’t save us. We save ourselves.
I’m still new at this, and it’s still scary. But as I learned from Mindful Midweek, taking chances is part of a full, joyful life. Our leaps of faith may not lead to flight, but they can send us into the arms of caring and supportive people.
Thanks for being there.
