• I do like very much the method of Interactive Journaling®. Our Motivational Interviewing research indicates that it is important to elicit clients’ own language and for people to be actively involved in their own positive behavior change. Interactive Journaling® is a method designed specifically for this purpose – to engage each person actively in the thought and behavior processes of change, rather than being a passive recipient.

  • I’ve been in this field for 18 years, and when I first saw My Personal Journal I just loved it! The Change Companies® was very helpful and made it easy to access. We love it because it covers every major area of treatment that we try to cover. We have developed our treatment plan around it. It makes it easy to do charting and when JCAHO and CARF come in, they just think it’s great – everything is so clearly documented.

Nan Casey, IOP Coordinator, Tennessee Christian Medical Center, Madison, Tennessee

  • For the past several years I have engaged The Change Companies® in selecting and creating Interactive Journals for several criminal justice populations. Through journaling, clients are better prepared to discuss topics in group and individual settings. It’s an economical way of extending the treatment process while giving each client a point of reference for ongoing change.

Interactive Journaling®

Interactive Journaling® is a structured and experiential writing process that motivates and guides participants toward positive life change.

Since 1989, The Change Companies® has collaborated with industry leaders in behavior change to create Interactive Journals to promote positive, lasting change. We know there is no shortage of educational materials. However, we've learned the key is to go beyond traditional education and help people apply pertinent information to their own lives.

That's where Interactive Journaling® can help.

Interactive Journaling® is a participant-directed approach designed to enhance the therapeutic alliance while bringing structure and consistency to service delivery. Interactive Journaling® emphasizes real-life application, encouraging participants to ask, “What does this mean to me?” Powerful enough to help individuals achieve their change goals, Interactive Journals are easy to follow and will keep participants engaged.

This innovative process was originally created with the assistance of over 250 professionals in the health and human services field. The Change Companies® has further improved the design and delivery of Interactive Journaling® through end-user feedback, counselor and facilitator reviews and numerous follow-up studies.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Are your materials evidence-based?

Yes. Interactive Journals apply practices that research demonstrates to be most effective in behavior change using a client-centered application. Interactive Journaling® is also included in SAMHSA's National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP).

  2. Can you help me select the materials that are the best fit for our programs?

Yes, we'd be happy to help. Because most Interactive Journals are modular and nonsequential, we will work with you to identify and combine the elements that best support your program objectives and individualize each patient's treatment and case management plan.

  3. Do you offer training on your resources?

Yes, we offer a suite of comprehensive training, consultation and professional support services to help individuals and organizations effectively apply proven approaches for behavior change. Our training resources cover broad topics such as the ASAM criteria and they also offer curriculum-specific content, for those using Interactive Journals such as The Courage to Change or the MEE series. Finally, trainees have their choice of delivery methods, as we offer a variety of electronic and in-person training options.

  4. How many hours or sessions does it take to complete a Journal or program?

Each Journal is divided into sections that can be delivered differently based on the intensity and frequency of treatment needed. Rather than a “one size fits all” approach, the flexibility that Interactive Journaling® offers enables it to be used in a variety of configurations. Contact our consultative sales staff for assistance with constructing the most effective program service delivery model.

  5. Can you send me several sample Journals?

Our website provides the most thorough and efficient review process for each of our Interactive Journals. Clicking the orange magnifying glass icon near a Journal or Facilitator Guide enables you to preview several pages of each individual Journal. If you need additional assistance, contact our experienced staff to receive a personalized, guided tour through our resources.
